How effective is chest x-ray for tuberculosis?

A radiograph can show areas of inflammation, cavities, scarring, or enlarged lymph nodes in the chest. These findings may fit pulmonary tuberculosis, yet other infections and non-infectious conditions can look similar. A normal image also does not always rule out early disease or tuberculosis outside the lungs. The clinician combines the image with symptoms, exposure history, examination findings, and tests on respiratory samples when appropriate.

Follow the testing plan given by your clinician. You may be asked to provide sputum for molecular testing, microscopy, or culture, and blood or skin testing may be considered for tuberculosis infection. Do not start, stop, or share tuberculosis medicines without medical supervision. If active lung disease is being considered, ask how to reduce close contact with others while results are pending and attend follow-up even if the x-ray appears reassuring.

Arrange prompt medical assessment for a cough that persists, coughing blood, fever, night sweats, unexplained weight loss, chest pain, or breathlessness, especially after close contact with someone who has tuberculosis. Seek urgent help for severe breathing difficulty, significant bleeding, confusion, or blue lips. These warning signs require assessment regardless of what an earlier x-ray showed.

Ask which finding was seen, whether you need sputum or other tests, whether tuberculosis outside the lungs is possible, and when results or repeat imaging should be reviewed.
