How effective is chemotherapy for prostate cancer?

For prostate cancer, chemotherapy is often considered when cancer has spread or has continued despite hormone-based treatment. It may shrink tumours, slow their growth, reduce cancer-related pain, or improve day-to-day function. Doctors judge the effect using symptoms, examination findings, blood tests such as prostate-specific antigen when appropriate, and scans. A change in one measure alone does not tell the whole story.

The medicines circulate through the body, which allows them to reach cancer cells in different areas. They also affect some healthy fast-growing cells, so tiredness, nausea, appetite changes, hair loss, mouth soreness, or lower blood-cell counts can occur. Your oncology team balances expected benefit with side effects and other health conditions.

Before treatment, your team reviews the cancer’s extent, previous medicines, heart and nerve health, kidney and liver function, and your priorities. Treatment is usually given in cycles with planned breaks, allowing recovery and checks between visits. Keep a record of new symptoms, temperature readings when advised, medicines, and changes in pain or urination.

Tell the team about supplements, dental problems, and medicines you take. Do not stop prescribed treatment without advice. Ask how response will be measured, when scans or blood tests are planned, and what options remain if the cancer does not respond or side effects become difficult.

Contact your oncology team promptly for a fever or chills, new shortness of breath, persistent vomiting or diarrhoea, inability to drink, unusual bleeding, severe mouth sores, confusion, or rapidly worsening weakness. Low blood-cell counts can make infection or bleeding more serious during treatment, even when symptoms begin mildly.
