How effective is chemotherapy for pancreatic cancer?

When pancreatic cancer can be removed, chemotherapy may be offered before or after surgery to treat cells that scans cannot show. If surgery is not possible, treatment may slow growth and reduce symptoms such as pain, poor appetite or jaundice when cancer causes them. Response is assessed with scans, examinations, blood tests and how you feel; a stable scan can still mean treatment is controlling growth. Doctors balance possible benefit with effects such as tiredness, nausea, diarrhoea, low blood counts, infection risk or nerve changes.

Ask whether the aim is to prepare for surgery, control cancer or ease symptoms. Tell the team about weight loss, diabetes, jaundice, digestive problems and all medicines. Pancreatic enzyme replacement, dietitian input and pain support may improve eating and energy. Keep appointments for blood tests and report new symptoms rather than waiting for the next cycle.

Contact the treatment unit urgently for fever, chills, repeated vomiting, severe diarrhoea, confusion, worsening yellow skin, severe abdominal pain, breathlessness or inability to drink. Sudden swelling or pain in a leg also needs prompt medical advice.
