How effective is chemotherapy for oesophageal cancer?

Chemotherapy may be given before surgery or radiotherapy to reduce the tumour and treat cancer cells elsewhere in the body. After surgery, it may help lower the chance of cancer remaining. When surgery is not suitable, treatment may slow growth, relieve swallowing problems or pain, and help maintain daily function. Doctors judge response using symptoms, examinations and scans; a response can be shrinkage, stable disease or progression. Side effects such as tiredness, nausea, infection risk, appetite changes or numbness can influence which medicines and schedule are suitable.

Ask the oncology team what the aim is in your situation and how response will be checked. Tell them about weight loss, swallowing difficulty, medicines, allergies and other illnesses. A dietitian can suggest high-energy foods or drinks when eating is difficult. Keep a record of temperature, symptoms and treatment dates, and ask before taking supplements because some can affect medicines.

Contact your cancer team urgently for a fever, chills, sudden breathlessness, chest pain, uncontrolled vomiting, inability to swallow fluids, severe weakness or signs of dehydration. Follow the emergency plan supplied by your treatment unit, particularly if you have a central line or are unable to keep medicines down.
