How treatment works
Multiple myeloma begins in plasma cells in the bone marrow. Medicines used in its treatment can reduce abnormal plasma cells and the proteins they produce. Chemotherapy may be combined with other myeloma medicines, steroids, or a stem-cell treatment plan. The aim may be to bring the disease under control, reduce bone marrow activity, ease symptoms, or prepare for another treatment.
Doctors follow response with blood and urine tests, blood counts, kidney tests, calcium levels, imaging, and sometimes a bone marrow examination. The results show how the myeloma is behaving and whether the current plan should continue or change.
What you can do during treatment
Before treatment, share your medicines, supplements, allergies, infections, dental problems, and kidney history. Keep appointments for blood tests and report new bone pain, weakness, reduced urine, constipation, or unusual thirst. These symptoms can reflect complications of myeloma or treatment and may need prompt attention.
Take prescribed medicines exactly as directed and ask before starting an over-the-counter product. Your team can advise on infection precautions, activity, hydration, pain relief, and bone health. Never stop a myeloma medicine without discussing it with the prescribing team.
When to seek urgent care
Call your cancer team promptly for fever or chills, worsening breathlessness, persistent vomiting, severe diarrhoea, confusion, marked drowsiness, or a sudden reduction in urine. Emergency assessment is needed for new leg weakness, loss of bladder or bowel control, severe back pain with numbness, chest pain, or severe breathing difficulty.
Myeloma and its treatment can affect immunity, blood counts, bones, nerves, kidneys, and calcium balance. Rapid changes can be serious even when earlier symptoms were mild.
