Liver metastases are cancer deposits that began elsewhere, so the medicines are chosen according to the primary cancer rather than the liver alone. Treatment may aim to reduce tumour growth, control discomfort, protect liver function, or make a local procedure more feasible. Doctors judge the response through scans, blood tests, symptoms, and how well you can manage daily activities. A tumour can remain visible while treatment is still controlling it; a change in the plan may be considered if scans show growth or side effects become difficult.

Ask which cancer type the liver deposits represent and what outcome your team is targeting. Discuss whether chemotherapy will be used alone or alongside surgery, ablation, radiotherapy, targeted treatment, or immunotherapy. Keep a record of new pain, nausea, bowel changes, appetite, and energy. Tell the team about medicines, supplements, liver problems, fever, or previous treatment so they can tailor the regimen and supportive care.

Contact your oncology team promptly for a fever, chills, worsening breathlessness, repeated vomiting, inability to drink, unusual bleeding, confusion, or rapidly increasing abdominal swelling. Yellowing of the skin or eyes, very dark urine, pale stools, or severe right-sided abdominal pain also needs timely assessment because liver function may be affected.
