How effective is chemotherapy for bowel cancer?

For bowel cancer, chemotherapy may be given after surgery to lower the chance of cancer returning, before surgery to shrink disease, or for cancer that cannot be removed or has spread. It can also ease symptoms caused by a tumour. The plan is based on the bowel or rectal location, stage, laboratory features, previous treatment, kidney and liver function, and fitness.

Doctors judge benefit through scans, examination, symptoms, blood tests, and sometimes markers linked to the tumour. A response may be shrinkage, slower growth, or symptom improvement; stable disease can also guide whether treatment should continue.

Discuss how chemotherapy relates to surgery, radiotherapy, targeted treatment, or immunotherapy. Report changes in bowel movements, appetite, weight, pain, numbness, or hydration. Ask for an anti-sickness plan and advice about diarrhoea, constipation, mouth care, activity, and food. Keep appointments for blood tests because treatment may need adjustment when counts or organ function change.

Contact the oncology service urgently for fever, chills, severe diarrhoea, repeated vomiting, inability to drink, severe abdominal pain or swelling, black or heavy bloody stools, breathing difficulty, or sudden deterioration. These symptoms can signal infection, dehydration, bleeding, or a bowel complication.
