How effective is chemical peel for acne scars?

A peel removes or loosens selected surface layers, which can make mild textural irregularity and post-acne discolouration look more even as the skin heals. It cannot rebuild a deep depression or release a scar attached to tissue below the skin. A clinician may therefore recommend another procedure, or a combination, after identifying whether the mark is a flat colour change, a shallow depression, a deep narrow pit, or a raised scar.

Healing skin can be sensitive. Redness, dryness, flaking, or a temporary change in colour may follow treatment. Irritation and sunlight can make pigmentation harder to control, especially in skin that darkens readily after inflammation.

Wait until active acne is controlled enough that new inflammation is not continually creating fresh marks. Ask to see how the proposed treatment matches your scar pattern rather than assuming every peel has the same effect.

Use the recommended cleanser, moisturiser, and sun protection while the skin recovers. Avoid picking, scrubs, waxing, and unapproved lightening products until the surface has settled.

Seek prompt advice for severe burning, blisters, marked swelling, spreading redness, drainage, or a new raised scar after treatment. A dermatologist should assess scars that are painful, itchy, rapidly changing, or accompanied by ongoing active acne before any cosmetic procedure.

Ask what type of scar you have, whether a peel can reach it, how many treatment stages may be considered, what downtime to expect, and how pigment changes will be prevented and treated.
