Short answer

Cervical screening can detect HPV in cervical cells and identify related changes, but it cannot show when infection began or predict every future result.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Detects

When the infection began or whether it will persist.

What an HPV result tells you

The test examines a sample of cervical cells for HPV types linked with cervical cell changes. Some infections clear or become undetectable, while others persist and may cause changes that need monitoring. A positive result does not identify a recent sexual contact or prove that cancer is present. A negative result means the test did not find the HPV or changes it was designed to assess at that appointment; it does not replace future screening.

If cell changes are found, the next step depends on the result and your history. This may include repeat screening, closer examination of the cervix, or another follow-up plan.

Using the result well

Attend screening when invited and provide accurate information about previous results, pregnancy, immune conditions and treatments. Read the follow-up instructions carefully and arrange the recommended appointment even if you feel well. Ask how the result was obtained, whether cell changes were present, and what interval or examination is advised. Avoid trying to date the infection from the result alone.

Symptoms that need separate care

Contact a clinician for bleeding after sex, bleeding between periods, unusual discharge, pelvic pain, or bleeding after menopause. Screening may be due even without symptoms, but it is not a diagnostic test for every cause of bleeding.

Questions for your doctor

Ask: Was HPV detected, and were cell changes seen? What follow-up is recommended? Does my previous screening history alter the plan? Could pregnancy or an immune condition affect interpretation? Who should I contact if symptoms develop before review?

Questions people ask

Does a positive HPV result mean cancer?

No. It means HPV was detected; follow-up determines whether cervical cell changes are present and need attention.

Can screening tell who gave me HPV?

No. The result cannot identify when the infection began or which partner transmitted it.
