How effective is cervical fusion for cervical radiculopathy?

Cervical radiculopathy is irritation or compression of a nerve root in the neck, often causing pain, tingling, numbness or weakness into the shoulder and arm. Fusion usually combines removal of the pressure with stabilization of the painful or damaged disc level. It is more useful when symptoms match the affected level and have not settled with appropriate non-surgical care, or when weakness is progressing. Arm pain can improve before altered sensation or muscle strength. Fusion does not treat every source of shoulder or arm pain.

Bring a clear timeline of symptoms, treatments tried and any changes in strength to your consultation. Ask how examination and imaging identify the responsible nerve. After surgery, follow instructions for wound care, neck movement, lifting and driving. Walking is often encouraged within the prescribed limits, while physiotherapy builds posture, shoulder movement and safe strength. Do not judge the final result during the earliest healing phase; nerve tissues may settle gradually.

Urgent assessment is needed for rapidly worsening arm or hand weakness, new difficulty walking, loss of bladder or bowel control, or severe symptoms after an injury. Following surgery, report fever, drainage, increasing swelling, severe pain, worsening swallowing trouble or breathing difficulty promptly. A new loss of grip or coordination should not wait for a routine appointment.

Ask which nerve root is affected, whether the disc or bone spur is the source, what non-surgical options remain, and why fusion is preferred. Clarify expected changes in pain, sensation and strength, recovery restrictions, rehabilitation and warning signs.
