How effective is cervical fusion for cervical myelopathy?

Cervical myelopathy occurs when the spinal cord is compressed in the neck. Fusion is usually combined with decompression: pressure is removed, then the treated segment is stabilized while the bones heal together. The main purpose may be to protect remaining spinal cord function, not simply to relieve neck pain. Numbness, hand clumsiness, balance problems or weakness may improve slowly, remain partly present or continue if the cord has been affected for a long time. The level and number of compressed segments influence the approach.

Tell your surgeon about changes in walking, hand coordination, bladder or bowel control, and arm or leg strength. After surgery, follow neck-movement, lifting and wound instructions. Rehabilitation may address walking safety, balance, hand coordination and strength rather than forcing painful neck motion. Keep follow-up appointments so fusion progress and neurological function can be checked. Avoid falls and contact sports until your team confirms that healing and stability support them.

New or worsening weakness, difficulty walking, loss of hand control, or new bladder or bowel problems needs urgent medical assessment. After surgery, seek prompt advice for increasing wound swelling, fever, drainage, severe neck pain, trouble swallowing that is worsening, or breathing difficulty. Sudden severe symptoms should be treated as an emergency.

Ask where the cord is compressed, what decompression and fusion will address, which symptoms may recover, and what improvement cannot be promised. Clarify implant details, activity restrictions, rehabilitation goals, warning signs and how healing will be monitored.
