How effective is cervical cerclage for preterm labour?

Preterm labour can begin through several pathways, including contractions, infection, bleeding, or changes to the cervix. A cerclage is most relevant when the cervix is shortening or opening without normal labour, or when a previous pregnancy history suggests cervical weakness. It places a stitch around the cervix to provide support while the pregnancy continues.

A stitch cannot stop established labour or repair ruptured membranes. The clinical team may use examination, ultrasound and symptom history to decide whether the likely benefit outweighs procedural risks. Follow-up is still needed after placement.

Ask whether your current findings point to cervical opening or another pathway to early labour. Keep scheduled reviews and follow advice about medicines and activity. Clarify how cervical length will be monitored, what happens if contractions start, and how the stitch fits with your delivery plan. Treatment decisions should be made promptly when the cervix is changing or symptoms are present.

Seek urgent maternity advice for repeated tightening, painful contractions, pelvic pressure, vaginal bleeding, fluid leakage, fever, chills, or unusual-smelling discharge. These signs may indicate preterm labour, infection or a membrane problem, whether or not a cerclage is present.
