How effective is cervical cerclage for cervical insufficiency?

A cerclage is a stitch placed around the cervix to help it stay closed while the pregnancy progresses. It may be considered because of a previous pregnancy loss or early birth, a short cervix seen on ultrasound, or cervical opening found during an examination. The stitch supports the cervix; it does not correct every cause of early birth and cannot prevent all contractions, infection, or membrane problems. The expected benefit is therefore different for a planned stitch and one placed urgently after the cervix has begun to open.

Your maternity team weighs the possible benefit against factors such as bleeding, infection, contractions, ruptured membranes and the stage of pregnancy. Monitoring remains part of care even when the stitch is in place.

Ask which finding led to the recommendation and what outcome the team is trying to prevent. Follow instructions about activity, medicines and follow-up, and keep ultrasound or antenatal appointments. Do not put a stitch decision on hold while trying to compare results from other pregnancies; the current cervical length, symptoms and examination matter. Discuss when the stitch is expected to be removed and what symptoms should change that plan.

Contact your maternity unit promptly for regular tightening or painful cramps, vaginal bleeding, leaking fluid, fever, chills, foul-smelling discharge, or strong pelvic pressure. After a cerclage, these symptoms can signal labour, infection, or a problem with the membranes and need assessment rather than home observation.
