How effective is carpal tunnel release for carpal tunnel syndrome?

The median nerve passes through a narrow space at the wrist. Release surgery cuts the tight ligament forming the roof of that space, giving the nerve more room. Night-time tingling and numbness may improve before constant numbness or weak thumb muscles, particularly when compression has been present for a long time. Surgery does not treat a separate neck, shoulder, or nerve disorder that can mimic hand symptoms, so diagnosis matters.

Ask how to keep the dressing and incision protected, when gentle finger movement should begin, and when gripping, lifting, driving, or work can resume. Expect the palm and scar area to feel tender while tissues heal. Follow hand exercises if prescribed, avoid forceful use until cleared, and attend follow-up if sensation, strength, or wound healing is not progressing as expected.

Contact the surgical team for increasing redness, drainage, fever, worsening swelling, or pain that is not settling. Seek urgent assessment for a cold or discoloured hand, rapidly worsening weakness, loss of sensation, or severe pain after an injury. New symptoms in the neck or arm may need a separate examination.

Ask whether testing confirms median nerve compression, what symptoms surgery is expected to improve, how long recovery may take, what work restrictions apply, and whether another condition could be contributing.
