How effective is CAR T-cell therapy for acute lymphoblastic leukaemia?

The treatment collects some of your T cells, modifies them to recognise a marker on leukaemia cells, and returns them after preparation. Your team checks blood, bone marrow and symptoms to see whether leukaemia has responded. A response may be complete or partial, and the disease can return even after a strong initial response. Suitability depends on the type of ALL, previous treatment, general health, disease burden and the CAR T product available.

Ask the haematology team how they will measure response and when those checks will happen. Discuss bridging treatment if disease needs control while cells are being made, the expected hospital stay, fertility and contraception, infection prevention, and whether another treatment may be needed later. Arrange a responsible adult and reliable transport for the period your centre recommends, because neurological effects can appear after the infusion.

Contact your treatment centre urgently for fever, chills, dizziness, unusual sleepiness, confusion, trouble speaking, seizures, severe weakness, breathing difficulty or rapidly worsening symptoms. These can signal cytokine release syndrome, an immune reaction, or neurotoxicity. Do not wait for the next appointment; use the emergency plan supplied by your team.
