How effective is caesarean section for placenta praevia?

Placenta praevia means the placenta is low in the uterus and may cover the opening of the cervix. A caesarean can allow the baby to be delivered through an incision chosen to avoid cutting through the placenta when possible. The plan depends on ultrasound findings, bleeding, the baby's growth, and how the placenta relates to the cervix later in pregnancy.

The operation lowers the need for the baby to pass through a blocked placental position, but it does not make bleeding risk disappear. The maternity team may arrange specialist staff, anaesthesia, and blood-safety support. A low placenta seen earlier can move away from the cervix as the uterus grows, so follow-up imaging matters.

Attend repeat scans and follow the advice about activity, intercourse, travel, and where to seek care. Tell the team about any bleeding, even if it stops. Ask when birth is planned, what happens if labour begins first, and how the incision will be selected. Go to urgent maternity assessment for any vaginal bleeding, contractions, abdominal pain, leaking fluid, dizziness, or reduced baby movements. Do not drive yourself if bleeding is heavy or you feel faint; call emergency services and follow the maternity unit's instructions.
