How effective is breast ultrasound for fibroadenoma?

Ultrasound uses sound waves to create an image of breast tissue. A fibroadenoma commonly appears as a solid, smooth, oval or gently rounded area that can move slightly within the surrounding tissue. The radiologist also considers its borders, internal pattern and blood flow.

The appearance can support a likely fibroadenoma, especially when it matches the examination and your age or clinical history. Ultrasound cannot always separate every benign lump from another solid lesion. A mammogram, repeat scan or core needle biopsy may be suggested when the image is unclear, the lump changes, or the clinical examination does not match the scan.

Take the imaging report to the clinician who arranged the scan and ask what category of follow-up it recommends. Keep track of whether the lump changes in size, becomes painful or feels different. Follow-up imaging may be used to watch a stable finding, while a tissue sample can provide a more definite answer when needed.

Arrange a clinical review for a new lump, a lump that is enlarging, skin dimpling, nipple inversion, spontaneous bloody discharge, or an armpit swelling. Seek urgent help for severe breast redness with fever or rapidly worsening pain, because infection may need prompt treatment.

Ask whether the ultrasound appearance is characteristic of fibroadenoma, whether the examination and image agree, and why follow-up or biopsy is being recommended. Also ask when the next assessment should occur and which changes should bring you back sooner.
