How effective is breast MRI for breast cancer?

MRI can help assess the size and location of a known tumour, look for additional areas in the same or opposite breast, and support planning before treatment. Contrast-enhanced images highlight tissue with particular blood-flow patterns, giving the radiologist information beyond a physical examination.

MRI findings are not always specific. Benign changes can look suspicious, and some cancers may be less visible than expected. The report is interpreted with mammography, ultrasound, examination, and biopsy results rather than used alone to make a diagnosis.

Ask whether MRI is being used for diagnosis, staging within the breasts, treatment planning, or response assessment. Tell the team about metal devices, kidney disease, contrast reactions, and pregnancy possibility. Bring earlier breast images when requested so the radiologist can compare changes over time.

Seek prompt clinical review for a new lump, nipple inversion or discharge, skin dimpling, persistent focal pain, or an enlarging breast change. After contrast, get urgent help for trouble breathing, swelling of the face or throat, or collapse.
