How effective is breast MRI for a BRCA gene mutation?

MRI uses a strong magnetic field and radio waves to create detailed images of breast tissue. Contrast material is commonly used to make areas with increased blood flow more visible. This can help the radiologist look for changes that are difficult to assess on other images, particularly in dense breast tissue.

MRI can also show findings that are not cancer. Movement, hormonal changes, and normal tissue can affect interpretation, so an area that looks different may lead to extra imaging or biopsy. MRI shows anatomy and tissue behaviour; it cannot prove cancer on its own.

Confirm the screening schedule with a breast specialist or genetics-informed clinician. Tell the MRI team about kidney problems, prior reactions to contrast, pregnancy possibility, metal implants, and anxiety in enclosed spaces. Avoid moving during the scan and ask when and how the result will be explained.

Contact the imaging service about a new rash, breathing difficulty, facial swelling, or persistent vomiting after contrast. Arrange prompt clinical review for a new breast or underarm change, nipple discharge, skin dimpling, or a rapidly changing area, whether or not a recent MRI was reassuring.
