How effective is breast lump excision for fibroadenoma?

A fibroadenoma is a solid breast lump that is often non-cancerous. During excision, a surgeon removes the lump through an incision, usually aiming to preserve as much surrounding breast tissue as possible. Removing the whole lump can settle uncertainty about its identity because the tissue can be sent for laboratory examination. It also removes that particular lump, although a different fibroadenoma can develop elsewhere or another lump can appear later. The result may include a scar, temporary swelling, bruising, altered contour, or a change in sensation around the incision.

Discuss whether the lump is growing, painful, large, changing the breast shape, or causing persistent worry. Your assessment may include an examination and breast imaging, with a needle sample when the diagnosis is uncertain. Some fibroadenomas can be monitored when their features and symptoms are reassuring; excision may be considered when the diagnosis is unclear or the lump is troublesome. Ask how much tissue will be removed, where the incision will be, what recovery involves, and how the tissue result will be communicated. Follow wound-care instructions and keep the planned review appointment.

Arrange a clinical assessment for a new, enlarging, firm, fixed, or persistent breast lump, even when fibroadenoma is suspected. After surgery, contact your care team promptly for increasing redness, warmth, swelling, drainage, fever, worsening pain, or bleeding that does not settle with the advised measures. Seek urgent help for heavy bleeding, severe breathing difficulty, or sudden chest pain. A breast change should be assessed on its own features; a lump does not by itself establish a cancer diagnosis.
