How effective is breast biopsy for fibroadenoma?

Ultrasound or mammography can describe a lump’s shape, borders and location, but tissue sampling gives a pathologist cells or a small core to examine. A needle biopsy may be guided by ultrasound or another imaging method. The report can support fibroadenoma and distinguish it from other benign findings or cancer. A result must still be matched with the examination and imaging; a clinician may recommend further sampling if the findings do not agree.

Tell the team about blood-thinning medicines, allergies, bleeding problems and possible pregnancy. Follow instructions about medicines before the procedure. Afterward, bruising, tenderness or mild swelling can occur; use the advised wound care and pain relief. Keep the pathology appointment so the result, imaging match and next step are clear. Some fibroadenomas are monitored, while growth, symptoms or uncertainty may change the plan.

Contact the biopsy service for increasing redness, warmth, swelling, drainage, fever or bleeding that does not settle with pressure. Seek urgent help for breathing difficulty, fainting or rapidly expanding breast swelling. Arrange reassessment for a lump that grows, a new skin or nipple change, or persistent bloody nipple discharge, even if an earlier lump was benign.

Ask why biopsy is recommended, which type will be used, when the pathology result should arrive, and whether the tissue result matches the imaging. Clarify whether monitoring, removal or another sample is advised and which changes should bring you back sooner.
