How effective is breast biopsy for breast cancer?

Imaging can show an area that needs checking, but a biopsy removes a small tissue sample so a pathologist can examine its cells. The report may identify cancer, a non-cancerous change, or a finding that needs further sampling. It can also describe the cancer type and features that help the oncology team plan care.

A needle biopsy is often guided by mammography, ultrasound, or MRI so the sample comes from the area of concern. If the sample does not explain the imaging finding, your team may recommend another biopsy or a different procedure.

Ask which imaging finding is being sampled, what type of biopsy is planned, and when the pathology report should be available. Tell the team about medicines that affect bleeding, allergies, pregnancy possibility, and any implanted devices. Follow the wound-care instructions and keep the follow-up appointment even if the area feels normal.

Contact the treating service promptly for bleeding that does not settle with firm pressure, increasing redness or warmth, pus, fever, worsening swelling, or pain that is not controlled by the advised measures. Seek urgent help for heavy bleeding, breathing difficulty, or sudden severe symptoms.
