How effective is brain tumour surgery for meningioma?

Many meningiomas grow from the coverings around the brain rather than brain tissue itself. An operation can provide a diagnosis, reduce the mass and address symptoms such as seizures, headaches or changes in vision. A tumour attached to a major blood vessel, a nerve or the skull base may be only partly removed if wider removal could cause harm. Remaining tissue may be watched with scans or treated with another approach when appropriate.

Discuss the tumour’s location, the intended extent of removal and alternatives such as monitoring or focused radiation. Arrange help at home, and ask about wound care, fatigue, seizures, medicines, work and driving. Seek urgent advice for a new seizure, increasing drowsiness, repeated vomiting, worsening weakness, new speech or vision difficulty, severe headache, fever, or wound swelling, redness or discharge. Call emergency services for collapse, unconsciousness or a sudden major change in neurological function.
