How effective is brachytherapy for vaginal cancer?

During brachytherapy, a doctor places an applicator in the vagina or close to the treatment area. A radiation source travels through the applicator for a planned session, then leaves the body. Because the source is near the tumour, treatment can focus on the target while reducing exposure to some nearby organs.

The treatment may be used after external beam radiation, alongside it, or in another carefully selected sequence. The medical team considers the tumour's depth and position, nearby bladder and bowel, prior surgery or radiation, and your general health. Examination and imaging help guide planning.

Ask whether the aim is to cure the cancer, reduce the chance of local return, or relieve symptoms. Discuss how many visits are planned, what preparation is needed, and how discomfort, discharge, urinary changes, or bowel changes will be managed. Keep every follow-up appointment so healing and response can be checked.

Tell your treatment team about heavy bleeding, worsening pelvic pain, fever, foul-smelling discharge, inability to pass urine, or new bowel problems. Seek urgent care for severe bleeding, fainting, severe abdominal pain, or sudden breathing difficulty.
