How effective is brachytherapy for womb cancer?

For some people, brachytherapy is given after surgery to treat the top of the vagina or nearby tissues where cancer cells could remain. It may be used alone or alongside external-beam radiation, depending on pathology findings and the risk pattern identified by the care team.

The applicator directs radiation to a defined area, so the treatment can be tailored to the target. Your doctor considers the cancer type, grade, depth of invasion, lymph-node findings, margins, symptoms, and overall health when explaining the expected benefit.

Confirm whether your treatment is internal only or part of a combined plan, and ask how the applicator is placed. Tell the team about vaginal bleeding, infection, bowel or bladder conditions, medicines, and pregnancy possibility. Follow instructions about appointments, hygiene, activity, and vaginal care.
