How effective is bone-strengthening therapy for prostate cancer?

These medicines act on the normal process that removes and rebuilds bone. In prostate cancer, they may be considered when cancer has spread to bone, when bones are fragile, or when hormone treatment is expected to reduce bone density. They support the skeleton; they do not replace treatment aimed at the cancer itself.

Your team may monitor pain, movement, fractures, calcium levels, kidney function, and dental health. Improvement may mean fewer bone complications or more stable bone strength rather than a visible change on a scan.

Ask which medicine is recommended, how it is given, and what goal it has for you. Tell the team about kidney problems, dental infections, planned tooth removal, low calcium, or previous fractures. Keep dental care up to date and report new jaw symptoms promptly. Follow advice about calcium, vitamin D, activity, and fall prevention; do not start supplements without checking the dose.

Contact your oncology team promptly for new or worsening bone pain, difficulty walking, a fall with significant pain, muscle cramps, tingling around the mouth, or unusual weakness. Sudden severe back pain with leg weakness, numbness, or loss of bladder or bowel control needs urgent medical assessment because pressure on the spinal cord can damage nerves.
