Some cancers increase bone breakdown, releasing stored calcium into the bloodstream. Bone-strengthening medicines act on this process and are often used alongside fluids and treatment for the cancer causing the calcium problem. The response is checked with blood tests rather than judged by symptoms alone.

The medicine may not work immediately, and its effect can vary with the calcium level, kidney function, hydration, and the underlying cancer. Confusion, thirst, constipation, nausea, weakness, and frequent urination can accompany high calcium, but other problems can cause similar symptoms.

Follow instructions about fluids and prescribed medicines. Tell the team about kidney disease, reduced drinking, vomiting, dental problems, or medicines that affect calcium or kidney function. Attend repeat blood tests so calcium and kidney function can guide further doses and supportive care.
