How effective is blood transfusion support for anaemia in cancer?

A transfusion supplies compatible red blood cells, helping carry oxygen when cancer, treatment, bleeding, or reduced marrow production has lowered haemoglobin. People may notice less breathlessness, dizziness, weakness, or tiredness after treatment, although the response differs between individuals. A transfusion supports the body; it does not remove a tumour or correct every reason anaemia developed.

The clinical team checks blood counts, symptoms, bleeding, treatment plans, and previous transfusions before deciding whether support is appropriate. They may also investigate iron, vitamin, kidney, inflammation, or marrow-related factors. Repeated transfusions can be useful for ongoing needs but require monitoring for reactions and other effects.

Tell your oncology team how your energy, breathing, pulse, and ability to walk or carry out daily tasks have changed. Keep appointments for blood tests so the team can follow haemoglobin and other blood-cell levels. Before a planned transfusion, mention previous reactions, pregnancy history, medicines, allergies, and any new fever or infection symptoms.

During the transfusion, report chills, rash, back pain, chest discomfort, nausea, sudden breathlessness, or feeling unwell immediately. Ask whether you need treatment for the cause of anaemia as well as transfusion support.

Seek urgent medical help for severe or rapidly worsening breathlessness, chest pain, fainting, confusion, heavy bleeding, or blue or grey lips. After a transfusion, urgent review is also needed for fever with chills, dark urine, yellowing of the skin, severe back pain, or breathing difficulty.
