How effective is a blood test for peripheral neuropathy?

Blood work may assess glucose problems, vitamin deficiencies, thyroid changes, kidney function, inflammation or other conditions that can injure peripheral nerves. The exact tests depend on your symptoms, medicines, diet, medical history and examination.

Peripheral neuropathy is assessed through the pattern of numbness, tingling, burning, weakness or balance difficulty, along with reflexes, strength and sensation. If the cause remains unclear, nerve conduction studies, electromyography or imaging may add information. A normal blood result does not rule out nerve damage, because some neuropathies are not explained by routine blood work.

Write down when symptoms began, where they occur, whether they are spreading and whether walking or hand use is affected. Bring a full medicine and supplement list. Follow the recommended preparation for testing, and do not stop prescribed treatment unless the clinician tells you to. Results are most useful when compared with the examination.

Get urgent help for rapidly worsening weakness, new difficulty breathing or swallowing, loss of bladder or bowel control, severe unsteadiness, or numbness that rises quickly. Sudden weakness or one-sided numbness also needs emergency assessment because it may signal a problem other than peripheral neuropathy.
