How effective is blood test for anaemia?

A full blood count measures haemoglobin and examines the size and number of red blood cells. These findings can support an anaemia diagnosis and suggest patterns such as iron deficiency, vitamin deficiency, inflammation or another blood problem. A result is interpreted alongside symptoms, medical history, menstrual or gastrointestinal blood loss, diet and long-term conditions.

The first blood sample may not answer every question. Your clinician might request ferritin and other iron studies, vitamin levels, kidney or thyroid tests, or a blood film. A normal haemoglobin result does not explain every cause of tiredness, and an abnormal result does not identify its cause by itself.

Attend the test as instructed and tell the clinician about supplements, medicines, bleeding, heavy periods, bowel changes, dietary restrictions and family blood disorders. Do not start iron or high-dose vitamins without advice, because treatment depends on the cause and excess supplementation can be harmful. Ask when results will be reviewed and whether repeat testing or an examination is needed.

Arrange prompt medical assessment for worsening breathlessness, chest pain, fainting, a racing heartbeat at rest, marked weakness or black or bloody stools. Seek urgent help for heavy ongoing bleeding, collapse or severe breathing difficulty. These symptoms need assessment regardless of whether a previous blood test was reassuring.

Ask which blood components were abnormal, whether iron stores or vitamin levels need checking, what cause is most likely from your history, and when improvement should be reassessed. Clarify whether close relatives or ongoing bleeding change the investigation.
