How effective is bisphosphonate therapy for Paget's disease of bone?

Paget's disease causes a localized area of bone to remodel in a disorganized way. The affected bone may become enlarged, misshapen, or mechanically weak. Bisphosphonates reduce the activity of cells that remove bone, helping quiet this high-turnover process. Treatment is most useful when symptoms or active disease create a clinical reason to intervene; a scan or blood test alone does not tell the whole story. Pain may have another source, such as arthritis or a nerve problem, so diagnosis and follow-up matter. Existing bending or enlargement usually needs separate management.

A clinician can identify which bones are involved, assess pain and movement, and choose an oral or infused option when suitable. Share your kidney history, calcium problems, dental plans, swallowing difficulties, and current medicines. Take the treatment exactly as instructed and attend follow-up checks for symptoms and disease activity. Physiotherapy, walking aids, footwear changes, or pain treatment may help with movement when the disease has altered alignment. Avoid self-treating new bone pain before its cause is checked.

Arrange review for persistent or changing bone pain, a new change in limb shape, worsening hearing or balance, or difficulty walking. Seek urgent care after a fall with severe pain or loss of function. Contact the treatment team for severe thigh or jaw pain, swallowing difficulty, muscle spasms, or tingling after therapy.
