How effective is biopsy for raised PSA?

PSA can rise with benign prostate enlargement, inflammation, infection, recent procedures, or cancer. Before biopsy, clinicians may repeat the blood test, examine the prostate, review medicines and urinary symptoms, or use magnetic resonance imaging to target a concerning area. Biopsy samples are examined for cancer and may show how abnormal the cells look.

A negative result lowers concern but does not rule out cancer in every circumstance, because unsampled tissue may differ. Your clinician may recommend monitoring, another scan, or repeat biopsy based on the whole picture rather than PSA alone.

Tell the team about blood thinners, allergies, antibiotic reactions, diabetes, immune problems, and recent urine symptoms. Follow instructions about medicines, bowel preparation, food, and transport. After the procedure, complete prescribed medicines and attend the result appointment. Temporary blood in urine, semen, or stool can occur, but ask what is expected for your biopsy method.

Contact your medical team urgently for fever, shaking chills, inability to pass urine, worsening pelvic pain, heavy bleeding, clots, or feeling very unwell after biopsy. Infection after prostate biopsy needs prompt treatment, particularly when fever or urinary difficulty develops.

Ask whether imaging will guide the samples, which medicines need adjustment, how pathology grades are reported, what a negative result means for you, and when PSA or imaging will be repeated.
