How effective is biologic therapy for hidradenitis suppurativa?

Hidradenitis suppurativa involves recurring inflammation around hair follicles, often in skin folds. A biologic targets a specific part of the immune response, so benefit may appear as fewer new lumps, less tenderness, reduced drainage or longer quiet periods. Existing scarring and connecting tunnels may remain and can need separate care. Your dermatologist assesses the pattern over time rather than judging treatment from a single flare.

Before treatment, discuss infections, vaccinations, pregnancy plans, other medicines and relevant medical history. Follow the prescribed injection or infusion schedule and attend monitoring appointments. Report new infection symptoms promptly, and do not change or stop treatment without medical guidance. Wound care, pain relief, weight or smoking support when relevant, and procedures for persistent tunnels may be combined with biologic therapy.

Contact your treatment team for worsening drainage, rapidly enlarging painful areas, fever, spreading redness, or difficulty walking or sitting. Seek urgent help for severe illness, breathing trouble or facial swelling after a dose. A flare does not automatically mean the medicine has failed, but repeated flares should prompt a review of dose, timing, diagnosis and additional treatment.
