How effective is autologous stem cell transplant for Hodgkin lymphoma?

In an autologous transplant, your own blood-forming stem cells are collected and stored before high-dose chemotherapy. The chemotherapy targets lymphoma cells, then the stored cells are returned to rebuild blood production. The transplant is often considered after treatment has brought the lymphoma under control.

The likely benefit depends on whether the lymphoma is responding, its pattern of relapse, previous therapies, overall health, organ function, and the treatment options available afterward. A relapse can still occur, and recovery may involve infection risk, low blood counts, mouth soreness, nausea, and marked fatigue.

Ask how the response will be checked before collection and conditioning. Discuss stem-cell mobilisation, a central line, fertility preservation, medicines, vaccination timing, and who can help during recovery. Your team can explain food safety, infection precautions, activity limits, and when blood counts are expected to recover.

During and after transplant, call urgently for fever, shaking chills, uncontrolled bleeding, severe diarrhoea, repeated vomiting, new breathing difficulty, confusion, or inability to drink.
