How effective is antifungal treatment for thrush for nipple thrush?

Nipple thrush may cause burning or stinging pain, shiny or flaky nipple skin, or pain that continues after a feed. These features can overlap with a poor latch, eczema, blocked ducts, or bacterial infection, so symptoms do not establish thrush by themselves.

A clinician may recommend a cream or another antifungal medicine, depending on the nipple and breast findings. If a baby has oral thrush, the baby may also need assessment and treatment. Treating only one person can allow symptoms to return during breastfeeding.

Use the prescribed product as directed and wash hands before and after applying it. Keep nipples clean and dry, change breast pads when damp, and wash items that contact milk or the baby's mouth according to clinical advice. Do not stop early just because pain eases.

Ask whether the medicine should be removed before feeding and whether expressed milk should be handled in a particular way. Check with a clinician before using a non-prescribed product, especially while nursing.

Seek prompt assessment for fever, a hot or red area on the breast, a hard painful lump, pus, worsening pain, or flu-like illness, because mastitis or another condition may need different treatment. Seek urgent care if you feel severely unwell or have trouble breathing.
