How effective is antibiotic treatment for strep throat?

Strep throat is caused by streptococcal bacteria. Antibiotics help clear that infection and may shorten illness, reduce transmission, and lower the chance of certain complications. They do not treat viral sore throats, which can look similar. A throat swab or other assessment may help determine whether treatment is suitable.

Pain, fever, and difficulty swallowing can persist for a while after treatment begins. Rest, fluids, and clinician-approved pain relief can make swallowing easier. Finish the prescribed course unless the prescriber tells you to stop or changes the plan because of a reaction.

Take the medicine at the prescribed times and check what to do if you miss a dose. Tell the clinician about penicillin or other antibiotic allergies, pregnancy, and regular medicines. Avoid sharing food, drinks, or utensils while you are unwell, wash your hands, and replace a toothbrush only if your clinician advises it.

If you develop a rash, swelling, wheezing, severe diarrhoea, or vomiting after a dose, seek medical advice promptly. Do not use an old prescription for a new sore throat.
