How effective is antibiotic treatment for scarlet fever?

Scarlet fever is a bacterial illness often beginning with sore throat and fever, followed by a fine, rough-feeling rash. Antibiotics treat the underlying infection; the rash and tiredness may take longer to settle. Treatment also helps reduce spread to other people and lowers the chance of complications affecting areas such as the ears, joints or kidneys.

A clinician may assess the throat and rash before prescribing. Similar rashes can have other causes, so do not give a child leftover antibiotics or rely on appearance alone.

Give or take the medicine exactly as directed and complete the prescribed course. Encourage fluids and offer suitable food and comfort measures. Wash hands, avoid sharing cups or utensils, and follow local clinical advice about staying away from school, nursery or work while contagious.

Seek urgent help for breathing difficulty, swelling of the face or throat, severe drowsiness, dehydration, a purple or blistering rash, or a child who is rapidly becoming more unwell. Contact the prescriber if fever worsens, swallowing becomes difficult or there is no expected improvement.

Ask when the person can return to school or work, how to ease throat discomfort, what to do after a missed dose, and which changes would require another examination.
