How effective is antibiotic treatment for prostatitis?

Prostatitis describes inflammation or irritation of the prostate. When bacteria are responsible, antibiotics are selected to reach the prostate and may need to be taken for a longer course than for some other infections. Urinary burning, pelvic discomfort and fever may improve at different speeds. If tests do not show bacteria, antibiotics may not relieve symptoms, and other treatments may be considered.

A clinician may examine you and test urine or other samples before choosing treatment. Tell them about previous infections, antibiotic use and difficulty passing urine.

Take each dose as prescribed and do not stop because symptoms ease unless your prescriber tells you to. Drink normally, avoid activities that clearly worsen discomfort, and attend any planned review. Report side effects early, particularly diarrhoea, rash or breathing difficulty, so the treatment can be assessed safely.

Seek urgent care if you cannot pass urine, develop severe pain, confusion, shaking chills, persistent vomiting or feel faint. Fever with worsening pelvic or back pain can signal a more serious infection and needs prompt assessment.
