How effective is antibiotic treatment for amoebiasis?

Amoebiasis is caused by a parasite, so treatment may involve a medicine that acts on tissue infection and another medicine that clears organisms remaining in the intestine. The choice depends on symptoms, test results, medical history and whether infection has spread beyond the bowel. A medicine that eases diarrhoea does not necessarily remove the cause.

Symptoms may improve before the infection has been fully cleared. Testing can also be needed because other bowel illnesses can cause similar diarrhoea, cramps or blood in stool. Avoid self-treating with an old prescription or sharing medication.

Take the prescribed medicines for the complete duration, follow food and alcohol instructions, and drink fluids to reduce dehydration risk. Ask about handwashing and food preparation because bowel infection can spread through contaminated hands or food. Keep follow-up appointments if testing is requested, particularly when symptoms persist or return.

Contact a clinician promptly for blood in stool, severe abdominal pain, ongoing vomiting, fever, reduced urination, marked weakness or diarrhoea that is worsening. Urgent assessment is needed for confusion, fainting, severe dehydration or sudden intense abdominal pain. Symptoms outside the bowel, such as persistent right-sided upper abdominal pain, also need review.

Ask which test supports the diagnosis, whether treatment needs more than one medicine, what food or alcohol restrictions apply, and whether household members need advice. Confirm how you will know the infection has cleared and what to do if symptoms return.
