Folliculitis describes inflammation around hair follicles. Bacteria, yeast, friction, shaving, occlusion, or an irritant can produce similar-looking bumps, so a clinician may ask about grooming, sweating, products, and recent water exposure. Antibiotics are useful when bacteria are involved; another approach may be needed when the trigger is fungal or mechanical. Mild irritation can also settle after removing friction, while widespread, painful, or recurrent lesions deserve assessment.

Arrange review if bumps are spreading, painful, filled with pus, or not settling. Follow the selected treatment exactly, keep the area gently clean, wear loose clothing, and pause shaving or waxing over affected skin until it recovers. Avoid picking, sharing towels or razors, and applying thick oily products that trap heat. Tell the clinician about medicines, allergies, and whether the rash began after a new product, gym equipment, pool, or hot environment.

Seek prompt care for rapidly increasing redness, deep tenderness, fever, chills, red streaks, or a cluster of enlarging boils. Contact the prescriber if lesions continue to appear despite treatment, return repeatedly, or a medicine causes facial swelling, breathing difficulty, or a widespread rash.
