How effective is anti-inflammatory medication for olecranon bursitis?

Short answer
Anti-inflammatory medication may reduce pain and swelling from olecranon bursitis, but it cannot treat an infection and is not appropriate for everyone.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- May ease
- Tenderness and inflammatory swelling
- Cannot treat
- An infected bursa or repeated pressure by itself
- Avoid
- Piercing or draining the lump at home
What to expect
Olecranon bursitis affects the fluid-filled sac over the bony point of the elbow. Anti-inflammatory medication can calm irritation and make the elbow less sore, particularly when repeated leaning, friction, or a minor injury triggered the swelling. It may not remove a prominent fluid pocket or solve the pressure that caused it.
A swollen elbow can also become infected. In that situation, anti-inflammatory medication alone is not enough and may delay proper care. The treatment choice depends on redness, warmth, skin breaks, fever, the size and duration of swelling, and your general health.
Helpful measures
Avoid leaning on the elbow, protect it from knocks, and use a cold pack wrapped in cloth for brief periods if that feels helpful. Do not pierce or drain the swelling yourself. Use medicine only according to package or prescription directions, and check for interactions before combining pain products.
Mention ulcers, kidney or heart disease, high blood pressure, blood thinners, asthma reactions to pain medicines, allergies, and pregnancy to a clinician or pharmacist. If the lump repeatedly returns, ask about padding, activity changes, and an examination of the bursa.
When to seek care
Arrange prompt medical assessment if the elbow is hot, increasingly red, rapidly enlarging, very tender, draining fluid, or accompanied by fever or feeling unwell. Seek review when swelling does not settle, elbow movement becomes restricted, or pain follows a significant injury. These findings can require examination or drainage rather than more self-medication.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether the swelling appears irritated or infected, which medicine is safest with your health history, and how long to use it. Ask whether fluid testing, a protective pad, or a change in work and exercise habits would help prevent recurrence.

Questions people ask
Can anti-inflammatory medication remove the elbow lump?
It may reduce soreness and inflammation, but a fluid-filled swelling may persist and needs assessment if it is large, recurrent, or changing.
When could bursitis be infected?
Increasing warmth, redness, tenderness, drainage, fever, or feeling unwell can be warning signs. Seek prompt medical assessment rather than relying on tablets.
