How effective is anti-inflammatory medication for bursitis?

A bursa is a small fluid-filled cushion near a joint. Repeated pressure, a blow, infection, or another inflammatory condition can make it tender and swollen. Medication may calm the inflammatory response and make movement more comfortable. Relief can be limited if the area continues to experience kneeling, leaning, repetitive loading, or friction. It also cannot treat an infected bursa on its own.

The choice between a tablet, a topical product, or another approach depends on the location and severity of symptoms. Existing stomach, kidney, heart, or blood-pressure problems, pregnancy, asthma triggered by these medicines, and other medicines can change what is appropriate.

Use medicine only as directed on its label or by a clinician, and avoid combining products that contain the same type of anti-inflammatory ingredient. Reduce pressure on the sore area, use a wrapped cold pack for short periods, and keep gentle movement within comfort. If symptoms do not settle, a clinician can check whether the swelling is truly bursitis and whether drainage, physiotherapy, or treatment of another condition is needed.

Arrange prompt medical assessment if the bursa is hot, increasingly red, rapidly enlarging, or very painful, especially with fever or feeling unwell. Seek urgent help after a significant injury, or if pain and swelling prevent normal use of the limb. Sudden breathing difficulty, facial swelling, or widespread rash after a medicine requires emergency care.
