How effective is antenatal care package for pre-eclampsia?

Pre-eclampsia can affect blood pressure and organs during pregnancy, sometimes with few noticeable symptoms. Antenatal appointments give the team opportunities to check blood pressure, test urine, review symptoms and assess your baby's growth and wellbeing. These checks can show when observation is reasonable and when medicines, hospital review or planned birth need consideration.

The package is therefore a monitoring and coordination approach rather than a single cure. Its usefulness comes from repeated review, clear communication and acting on changes. Follow-up may become more frequent if blood pressure rises or tests suggest that you or your baby need closer observation.

Attend every scheduled appointment and take any prescribed medicine exactly as directed. Keep a record of symptoms such as headache, visual changes, upper abdominal pain or sudden swelling so you can describe when they began. Bring your medicines and home blood pressure readings, if your maternity team has asked you to check at home.

Ask which symptoms should prompt a call, where to attend outside clinic hours and how your baby's movements should be monitored. Do not change treatment or wait for the next appointment because a reading or symptom worries you.

Contact your maternity unit urgently for a severe or persistent headache, blurred vision or flashing lights, pain beneath the ribs, sudden swelling of the face or hands, vomiting that feels unusual, shortness of breath, heavy bleeding, reduced baby movements or a strong feeling that something is wrong. These symptoms need prompt assessment because pre-eclampsia can worsen without much warning.

Ask: What have my blood pressure and urine results shown? How often will I need checks? Which medicines are suitable for me? How will you assess my baby's growth and movements? What would make hospital observation or birth safer?
