How effective is antenatal care for gestational diabetes?

Gestational diabetes is high blood glucose first recognised during pregnancy. Antenatal care can arrange screening, explain how to check glucose if needed and review readings alongside meals, activity and pregnancy progress. It may also include monitoring the baby and planning birth care according to the individual situation.

The aim is to keep glucose in the range set by your maternity team while supporting healthy nutrition and growth. Some people manage with meal changes and activity; others need medicine or insulin. The plan can change as pregnancy progresses, so one reassuring appointment does not replace ongoing review.

Attend scheduled checks and record glucose readings in the format your team requests. Note meals, symptoms and any difficulty obtaining supplies so the clinician can interpret the pattern rather than a single result. Choose regular meals and follow the nutrition plan designed for you; avoid making major food restrictions without advice.

Take prescribed treatment as directed and ask what to do when you are unwell, cannot eat normally or miss a dose. Keep your maternity team informed about reduced fetal movement, medication concerns or repeated readings outside your agreed targets.

Contact your maternity team promptly if glucose readings repeatedly fall outside the targets they gave you, you cannot keep food or fluids down, or you feel unusually weak, confused or very unwell. Seek urgent maternity assessment for reduced fetal movement, vaginal bleeding, fluid leakage or painful regular contractions.
