How effective is an anomaly scan for neural tube defects?

Anomaly scanning is a detailed ultrasound examination of fetal anatomy. The sonographer looks at the shape and continuity of the spine, the skull and brain structures, and other organs. Neural tube defects include conditions such as spina bifida and anencephaly, which affect structures formed early in pregnancy.

The quality of the view can be affected by fetal position, movement, body tissue and the amount of fluid. Some findings are subtle or develop in ways that are not visible at the appointment. A scan that appears reassuring reduces concern about visible structural problems but does not rule out every genetic, developmental or health condition.

Attend the scan at the time recommended by your maternity team and follow any preparation instructions. If the sonographer cannot obtain all the views, a repeat scan may be suggested; this does not by itself mean that a defect is present.

If a possible neural tube defect is seen, ask what was observed, whether a specialist fetal-medicine review is needed and which additional imaging or tests could clarify the finding. Take time to discuss likely care during pregnancy and after birth before making decisions.

Anomaly scanning is usually planned care rather than an emergency test. Contact your maternity service urgently for heavy bleeding, severe abdominal pain, fluid leakage, regular painful contractions, fever or feeling acutely unwell. These symptoms require assessment independently of the scan result.

Ask: Were the spine and brain views complete? Was any area difficult to see? Would a repeat scan or specialist ultrasound help? If a finding is suspected, what does it mean and what support is available? When and how will I receive the written report?
