How effective is amniocentesis for Down syndrome?

During amniocentesis, a clinician uses ultrasound guidance to remove a small sample of amniotic fluid. The fluid contains fetal cells that a laboratory can examine for an extra copy of chromosome 21, the chromosome change associated with Down syndrome. This makes amniocentesis a diagnostic test rather than a screening estimate.

A result can confirm that the tested chromosome pattern is present or show that it was not found in the sample. The laboratory method and the timing of the report can vary, so ask which result will arrive first and whether any follow-up analysis is planned. A diagnostic result does not predict every aspect of a child’s health or development.

Discuss why amniocentesis has been offered, what the test can and cannot answer, and how the result could affect pregnancy care or decisions. Your clinician can explain the procedure, possible discomfort, bleeding, fluid leakage and infection, as well as the small risk of pregnancy loss.

Before the appointment, write down your questions and tell the team about your blood group, medicines and previous pregnancy procedures. Arrange a clear way to receive the result and ask who will explain it. Genetic counselling may help you consider the information in the context of your values and family circumstances.

Contact your maternity team promptly after the procedure if you have heavy bleeding, fluid leaking from the vagina, fever, worsening abdominal pain, contractions or feel seriously unwell. These symptoms need assessment because they can signal a complication, even though some mild cramping can occur.
