How effective is an AMH test for female infertility?

AMH is a blood marker linked with the number of small follicles in the ovaries. In an infertility assessment, it can help a clinician discuss ovarian reserve and anticipate how the ovaries might respond to fertility medicines. That information can support decisions about treatment planning, but it is only one part of the picture.

AMH does not assess egg quality, ovulation in every situation, fallopian-tube openness, the uterus or sperm. A result that is low, high or within an expected range cannot on its own establish the reason conception has not occurred. Age, cycle pattern, medical history, ultrasound and other tests give the result context.

Discuss the result with a fertility clinician rather than interpreting a laboratory range in isolation. Take information about cycle length, previous pregnancies, pelvic surgery, endometriosis, medicines and any previous fertility treatment. Ask what other checks are appropriate for both partners and whether the AMH result changes the choice or timing of treatment.

Book a fertility assessment if conception has been difficult, periods are absent or irregular, or you have a history that may affect ovarian function. Seek urgent medical attention for severe sudden pelvic pain, faintness or heavy bleeding. An AMH test should not delay an assessment when symptoms or reproductive concerns are already present.
