How effective is an AMH test for diminished ovarian reserve?

Anti-Müllerian hormone, or AMH, is produced by cells in developing ovarian follicles. The blood result can provide an estimate of ovarian reserve, meaning the pool of follicles that may respond during fertility treatment. A lower result may be consistent with diminished ovarian reserve, but the result needs interpretation alongside age, menstrual history, ultrasound findings and other hormone tests.

AMH mainly helps with planning and with anticipating how the ovaries may respond to stimulation. It does not measure egg quality, confirm whether ovulation is happening, show whether the fallopian tubes are open or assess sperm factors. A result outside an expected range is therefore a reason for a fuller assessment, not a stand-alone verdict about the possibility of pregnancy.

Ask the clinician who ordered the test what the result means in your circumstances and whether repeat testing or an ultrasound is useful. Bring details of cycle regularity, previous ovarian surgery, endometriosis, chemotherapy or fertility treatment because these can affect interpretation. If you are considering fertility preservation or treatment, ask how the estimate changes the available options and timing.

Arrange an appointment with a fertility or gynaecology clinician if you have a low result, irregular or absent periods, or difficulty conceiving. Seek care sooner for sudden severe pelvic pain, heavy bleeding or symptoms that may suggest an urgent ovarian problem. Do not delay assessment while waiting for an AMH result if you already have concerns about fertility.
