How effective is allogeneic stem cell transplant for acute myeloid leukaemia?

Treatment begins with conditioning therapy followed by donor stem cells. The donor immune system can help remove residual AML cells, an effect called graft-versus-leukaemia. Doctors consider whether AML is in remission, measurable residual disease, chromosome and gene findings, prior treatment and the chance of complications. Blood counts and marrow tests show whether the graft is working and whether abnormal cells remain.

Transplant is intensive. Infection, graft-versus-host disease, organ injury, fertility effects and prolonged weakness are possible. The decision balances these concerns against the individual risk of AML returning without transplant.

Ask the team to explain your AML risk group, response results and donor search. Discuss fertility preservation, central-line care, medicines and who can help during recovery. Once home, take preventive medicines exactly as prescribed and attend blood, marrow and infection checks. Avoid crowded or sick contacts when advised, and follow the unit's food and environmental precautions.

Call the transplant unit urgently for fever, shaking chills, new cough, breathing difficulty, bleeding, severe headache, a widespread rash, yellowing skin, or ongoing diarrhoea. These symptoms can signal infection, graft-versus-host disease or another complication requiring rapid assessment.
