How effective is allergy testing for house dust mite allergy?

Skin-prick or blood testing looks for an immune response to house dust mite proteins. A positive result supports sensitivity, but it does not by itself prove that mites cause every blocked nose, sneeze, itchy eye or wheeze you experience.

Symptoms that persist indoors, are worse during cleaning or disturb sleep may help the clinician judge whether the result is relevant. A negative result may prompt consideration of other triggers, such as pollen, mould or irritants.

Share details about where symptoms occur, whether they continue throughout the year, and any asthma or eczema symptoms. Bring a list of nasal sprays, inhalers, antihistamines and other treatments.

If dust mite sensitivity is supported, your clinician may discuss reducing bedroom dust reservoirs, washing bedding appropriately and using prescribed medicines. Avoid major household changes based only on a test result; make the plan fit your symptoms and living situation.

Get urgent medical help for severe breathlessness, difficulty speaking because of breathing, blue or grey lips, marked chest tightness, confusion or fainting. Follow your asthma action plan and use prescribed reliever treatment as directed while arranging help.
